Smith Machine Squat

Beginner Machine Compound Quads

How to do it

  1. Set the bar at shoulder height, step under it and rest it on your upper back.

  2. Feet shoulder-width apart, slightly in front of the bar so your knees do not travel too far forward.

  3. Rotate the bar to unhook it, then descend until your thighs are at least parallel to the floor.

  4. Drive through your whole foot until you are standing tall.

Common mistakes

  • Feet directly under the bar, making the heels lift and stressing the knees.

  • Forgetting to set the safety stops at a safe height before the set.

Tips

  • The fixed bar path is great for learning squat depth or training alone.

  • Move your feet further forward for more glutes, further back for more quads.
