Neutral-Grip Pull-Up

Intermediate Bodyweight Compound Lats

How to do it

  1. Use parallel handles or a V-bar so your palms face each other.

  2. Hang tall, press the shoulders down, and brace the abs so you do not swing.

  3. Drive the elbows straight down along your sides until your chest nears the handles.

  4. Hold briefly at the top and squeeze the back muscles.

  5. Lower under control to full arm extension before the next rep.

Common mistakes

  • Cranking the head back to help the body up.

  • Curling into a C shape so the back never works through full range.

  • Cutting the range on the last few reps as fatigue hits.

  • Letting the shoulders ride up to the ears in the hang.

Tips

  • The neutral grip is usually the friendliest option for cranky shoulders and elbows.

  • No parallel handles? Hook a V-bar attachment over a straight pull-up bar.
