Beginner Bodyweight Isolation Abs

How to do it

  1. Lie on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor.

  2. Rest your fingers lightly behind your ears with elbows wide.

  3. Exhale as you curl your upper spine off the floor.

  4. Rise until your shoulder blades clear the floor, keeping the lower back down.

  5. Pause and squeeze the abs, then lower under control.

Common mistakes

  • Yanking on the neck with your hands.

  • Using momentum to swing your torso up.

  • Lifting the lower back and turning it into a full sit-up.

Tips

  • Think about pulling your ribs toward your hip bones.

  • Cross your arms over your chest if your neck keeps taking over.
