Triceps

Overhead Triceps Extension

Beginner Dumbbell Isolation Triceps

How to do it

  1. Sit or stand tall holding one dumbbell with both palms under the top plate.

  2. Press the dumbbell straight overhead with your elbows pointing forward.

  3. Lower the dumbbell behind your head by bending the elbows until you feel a stretch.

  4. Keep the upper arms vertical and close to your ears throughout.

  5. Press back up until the arms are straight and squeeze the triceps.

Common mistakes

  • Overarching the lower back as the dumbbell goes down.

  • Flaring the elbows so the load shifts to the shoulders.

  • Cutting the range short because you are afraid of dropping the weight.

Tips

  • Use an upright bench with back support to lock the lower back in place.

  • Brace your abs so your ribs do not flare forward.
