Side Delts

Upright Row

Intermediate Barbell Compound Side Delts

How to do it

  1. Stand tall with the bar in front of your thighs, hands at shoulder width (not narrow), palms facing you.

  2. Brace the abs, lift the chest, and pull the shoulders down.

  3. Pull the bar up close to your body by leading with the elbows out and up.

  4. Stop when the elbows reach shoulder height; do not pull any higher.

  5. Hold for a second, then lower slowly over 2-3 seconds to full extension.

  6. End the set if your wrists or shoulders start to pinch.

Common mistakes

  • Using a narrow grip and pulling all the way to the chin, the classic recipe for shoulder pain.

  • Swinging the torso to jerk the bar up.

  • Letting the wrists bend sharply at the top.

  • Pulling with the hands instead of leading with the elbows.

Tips

  • Use an EZ bar or dumbbells if a straight bar bothers your wrists.

  • If you have a shoulder history, skip this one and use lateral raises instead.
